Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Guwahati → Scenic drive to Shillong

Welcome at Guwahati Airport (or Guwahati railway station) and a 3.5-hour drive to Shillong (5,000 ft) — the 'Scotland of the East'. En route, photo stop at Umiam Lake for its emerald expanse ringed by pine forests. After check-in, evening walk on Police Bazaar for Khasi shawls, Ward's Lake and a bite at Café Shillong.

Day 2

Shillong sights & music-capital walk

A relaxed local day: Elephant Falls three-tier cascade, Shillong Peak for panoramic city views, Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures (7 floors of Northeast history), Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians and the impeccable Air Force Museum. Evening at the Laitumkhrah music cafés — Shillong is India's rock capital.

Day 3

Shillong → Cherrapunji (Sohra)

2.5-hour drive to Sohra (Cherrapunji) with a photo stop at Mawkdok Dympep Valley View. Afternoon at Nohkalikai Falls (India's tallest plunge waterfall — 1,115 ft), Seven Sisters Falls seven-strand cascade, Mawsmai Cave (a walk-through limestone chamber) and Eco Park with orchid gardens. Sunset over the plunging Sohra plateau.

Day 4

Nongriat Living Root Bridge trek

The signature Meghalaya day: drive to Tyrna village and descend approximately 3,500 stone steps to Nongriat for the world-famous Double-Decker Living Root Bridge — an ingeniously living structure grown by the Khasi people over 180+ years. Swim in the crystal Umshiang pools, cross the Rainbow Falls suspension bridge, then climb back. Evening rest at your Cherrapunji stay. (Alternative for lower fitness: single-decker root bridge at Mawlynnong.)

Day 5

Dawki river & Mawlynnong village

Drive to Dawki (2 hours) on the Bangladesh border for a boat ride on the extraordinarily clear Umngot river — the boat appears to float on air. Continue to Mawlynnong, officially declared Asia's cleanest village in 2003, for a walk through bamboo lanes, the sky-view treehouse and the balancing rock. Return to Shillong or overnight at a Mawlynnong homestay for the full cultural experience.

Day 6

Umiam Lake stop & return to Guwahati

Breakfast and a leisurely 4.5-hour drive back to Guwahati with a final photo stop at Umiam Lake and time for Khasi honey, pickles and Northeast handicrafts shopping. Transfer to Guwahati airport / railway station for your onward journey.

The Double-Decker at Nongriat requires descending and re-climbing approximately 3,500 stone steps (roughly 8 km round trip). It's moderate but genuinely strenuous — allow 5–6 hours with breaks. For lower fitness or seniors, we substitute the single-decker root bridge at Riwai (near Mawlynnong), which is a gentle 200-metre walk.

Yes — Meghalaya is among the most peaceful and tourist-friendly states in India. Locals (particularly the Khasi and Jaintia communities) are warm, English is widely spoken and Shillong has active nightlife. Solo female travellers report very comfortable experiences. We book vetted stays with 24×7 support.

Indian nationals do not need any inner-line permit — just a valid photo ID. Foreign nationals must register at the Foreigners' Registration Office on arrival at Guwahati and carry passport copies. We handle the paperwork and pre-fill the forms.

In October to March the visibility is often 15–20 feet — the boat genuinely appears to float on glass. In April–May clarity drops due to pre-monsoon showers, and June–September the river is turbulent and boat rides are suspended. We schedule Dawki in the clearest window whenever possible.

Cherrapunji is spectacular in the monsoon (July–August) but the Nongriat trek closes for safety, Dawki boats stop and drives become slow due to landslide risk. If you're set on monsoon, we redesign the itinerary as a waterfall-viewpoint tour with covered stays and skip the treks.

Yes — the base itinerary (Shillong, Cherrapunji viewpoints, Dawki boat, Mawlynnong) is fully accessible by vehicle and gentle walks. We recommend skipping the Nongriat trek for children under 10 and travellers over 65, and substituting the single-decker root bridge at Riwai instead.
